New York hotelsBy Samantha Chapnick

Take a New York City holiday in August to see exactly how cyclist personable the city & New York hotels, streets, & shops have become. Janette Sadik-Khan (the city’s transportation commissioner) is determined to give local & visiting bikers a new, safer way to enjoy the best parts of our city from two non-polluting, non-garage-needing wheels.

Although there have been many steps taken in the past few years to make the city more bike personable, this August offers the best chances to live the cycling life in New York City. Here are some things to put on your list. Read the rest of this entry »

We walked up to the top of the falls & went on the Journey Behind the Falls, which gets you behind the falls in tunnels to see the falls from a different perspective….so loud…and wet.

2. Harbourfront Centre, Toronto (12 million)

Toben & his roommates were so welcoming, it was the friends we made in Maui that really set the island apart from the others. Family-vacation-1

By Monica Randle

Our family vacation last summer was a trip to the mountains of Colorado. My son was 2 1/2 at the time, and although we knew he wouldn’t be able to participate in most of the traditional mountain activities, we were determined to find child-friendly adventures we could all enjoy. At first I thought the modifications to our trip would have to be extreme, but we soon found out that there are a plenty of Colorado adventures that suit parents and children alike.

During our stay, we rented a condo in Vail that provided easy walking access to the city center. In the city center we were able to rent bikes to ride around town as well as take trips up the ski lift to check out the view from Vail Mountain. Although our home base was Vail, we took many road trips to visit other areas of the state.

  • Canon City: We rode the Royal Gorge Route Railroad from Canon City (about 3 hours from Vail) for a 2-hour round-trip ride to see this beautiful gorge looking up from the railroad track that runs along the river.
  • Family-vacation
  • Piney Lake: We brought a picnic lunch to the shores of this picturesque lake.
  • Colorado Springs: We maneuvered up the twisting, turning road that leads to the top, Pikes Peak. (At 14,110 feet, don’t forget to bring your jacket; it’s cold even in the summer).
  • Glenwood Canyon: Hanging Lake (off I-65 just east of Glenwood Springs) is a hike we conquered without our little guy, but I think that older kids (8 and up) would be up for the challenge.
  • Estes Park: We drove across beautiful Rocky Mountain National Park to check out the wildlife and even did the easy, stroller-friendly hiking trail around scenic Bear Lake.
  • Radium: Our favorite family adventure was whitewater rafting (yes, with a 2 year old!) on the Colorado River. Our guide was incredible and had taken numerous small children out on the calm river before, so that put my mind at ease.

I can’t wait to plan our next family vacation to Colorado when our son is a little older. We want to return to Rocky Mountain National Park as well as try out some new adventures. At the top of our list for new activities is “Soaring Tree Top Adventures” which offers zip lining for ages 5-91. Accessible via the historic steam Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, we think this will be the perfect addition to our next family adventure vacation.

Las Vegas hotels

By E.C. Gladstone

Even though Mother’s Day has come and gone, the occasion inspired me to want to pay tribute to our many great female performers, young and old. Las Vegas may host the world’s most beautiful women, but it also has many of the most talented. If you want to see a Grand Dame put on a show, I can’t think of any place with more choices than the Las Vegas hotels. The list is always changing, but take a look at who’s on the boards these days…

Cher, Caesars Palace

Cher’s own self-styled career tribute is as much a Bob Mackie fashion exposition as it is a concert. “Don’t I look great in person?” the age-defying diva cracks. “It only took me five hours to get this way!” With a full troupe of tight dancers and aerialists backing her, Cher’s Colosseum show is clearly meant to be crowd-pleasing though it also includes more video than you might expect. Still, her retrospective duet with Sonny on “The Beat Goes On,” her equally effective takes on Pat Benatar’s “Love Is A Battlefield” and Thelma Houston’s “Don’t Leave Me This Way” are all pleasant surprises. Despite rumors, Cher is staying at Caesars at least through 2010Read the rest of this entry »

Best Surf and Sand: Dahab, Egypt

Years ago this used to be a big hippie town, and still is by most standards. But as times change and always seem to go more upscale, so goes out the more casual way of things, and in comes the more modern style to attract more of a diverse crowd. It is still very laid back here, no high rises, and still very poor villages just around the corner from where all the tourists stay and hang out. – Elizacass

Best Hot New City: Shanghai, China
