Vacation Packages

This blog is a non-commercial labour of love designed to help people find ideas, inspiration and great deals on vacation packages within the USA and around the world. The site works largely by finding vacation articles from feeds around the web, although I add my own vacation reviews and comments from travellers from time to time to add some more angles on certain vacations. You can also find cheap vacation package deals in the relevant categories, culled from various online travel agents and sites. Again, many of these are real time vacation package deals and will usually only be available for a short time.

Fall is what they call “shoulder season”, the period between the summer & Xmas holiday seasons known for low cost travel & a more relaxed pace at many holiday hot spots. In 2009, the Orbitz Insider Index reviewed average hotel costs in 10 popular shoulder season destinations, identifying which give travelers the most value this fall. Read the rest of this entry »

As anyone who’s used to booking vacation packages probably knows, a boatload of extra charges for beverage, food & activities can upset the holiday vibe, particularly if you’re traveling with kids during a cash-strapped spell. That’s why so many people have turned to all-inclusive vacations these days…you pay upfront, & you know there won’t be a second reckoning at the end. Lately you may get even more than you expected, as so many of these beachside paradises are introducing new & innovative extras to improve the vacation experience.

The greatest example of this that I’ve seen is the Paradisus chain, an all-inclusive brand within the Melia family. For all the different room categories, one round of golf & one SCUBA dive per day are included in the package price. Paradisus properties tend to be on the large side, so for a slight price hop, Family Concierge & Royal Service programs give  family or adult groups the extra personalized attention & perks they desire. For families, it’s kid’s amenities & snacks while for adults there’s a dry-cleaning & laundry service, private butlers & a business lounge with wireless access & other business amenities.

Another European-owned hotel group to check out is Occidental Hotels. Locations from Aruba to Costa Rica to Playa del Carmen offer all levels of all-inclusive holiday, from the casually barefoot ‘n fun Allegro resorts, where kids stay free with grownups; to the posh adults-only Royal Hideaway Playacar, where five-star services include free wireless, beach butler service & “Chef’s Table” interactive personalized dinner theater.

All inclusive holidays
Occidental Grand Xcaret
One can’t do justice to a story about all-inclusive vacations without specially mentioning the Riviera Maya. This golden strip of Mexico beach is home to most of the flagship properties in the world, including the Occidental Grand Xcaret, the only resort bordering stunning Mayan-themed eco-theme-park Xcaret (pronounced “Ixsh-Cah-Ret,” & yes, Occidental guests get discounted park admission); & the Grand Velas All Suites & Spa Resort Riviera Maya, a luxury spa resort so sophisticated in its spa & gourmet offerings that you really do forget it’s an all-inclusive. Their latest innovation is a 40,000 square foot “Water Lounge” with “Spa Valet” service…yes, access may require a slight extra charge, but for a day of mermaid bliss, it’s so worth it.

Another all inclusive vacation hot spot is Jamaica…where boutiquey properties like the Sunset Resorts offer poolside movie nights (Sunset Beach Resort), guided garden walks, mixology & cooking classes (Sunset at the Palms), & other fun extra activities geared toward smaller groups.  Also in Jamaica, longtime return travelers may shed a tear for the passing of Couples Ocho Rios…but only till they learn it’s transformed into the Couples Tower Isle, a beautifully re-envisioned take on the romantic inclusive.

From the “zero-edge” walk-in showers in guest rooms to the glass bottom boat tours to the “au naturel” sunbathing island, this is very much a grownup getaway — building on the tradition of 50 years.
Very soon the Grand Lido Resorts are going to undergo similar reflagging, but for now, it’s still operating under the grand moniker so many people know (and so many other chains have copied).  One “grand” extra to take advantage of while you’re visiting: complimentary mani/pedi at the Blue Mahoe Spa. This is an unsung perk that any over-stressed Type A vacationing traveller can seriously appreciate.

All-inclusive Vacations
Paradisus Playa Conchal

While most people don’t look to Central America for all-inclusive options, signs indicate that Costa Rica and Belize may soon become major players in that market. Costa Rica already has the Paradisus Playa Conchal & is going to get a new RIU resort in late fall. Belize isn’t big on the chain hotels yet (and that’s a good thing, say some people), but it has one-of-a-kind properties like St. George’s Caye Resort. This cool eco-resort offers extra-special all-inclusive holiday experiences including a seafood barbecue on the beach,  nighttime kayak excursions through the mangroves; & fresh-squeezed juice brought to guest rooms every morning.

Hawaii holiday Six months ago a certain guy from Hawaii introduced the “Yes, we can!” mantra to the American public, & now we’re reprising it right in time for the end of summer. After too many months of denying yourself all things fun & sunshine-y, the question as August rolls around is, “Can I somehow manage a Hawaii vacation after all, even on a shoestring budget?” The answer is …YES YOU CAN…

…get a cheap meal in the islands
In Oahu, Haili’s Backyard Luau, the new lunch wagon at Ward Centers, serves the same great Hawaiian plate lunches that were popular at former neighborhood fave Haili’s Hawaiian Foods for more than 50 years.  The Makai Market food court at Ala Moana Center offers everything from Japanese noodles & Korean BBQ to Hawaiian plate lunch & deli sandwiches. Diamond Head Market & Grill is especially well known for bakery items like the signature blueberry cream cheese scones, but later in the day it offers gourmet plate lunches, sandwiches, wraps, & desserts. My parents used to pack the family into our car & head out on the road for a 1- to 2-week family holiday each summer as soon as school let out. With family located in Kentucky, this meant an opportunity to drive down to Tennessee for part of our trip as well. It was always a special treat if we were able to go to Nashville during this time.

Now as an adult living in Memphis for work, I am fortunate to go to Nashville almost monthly for business & leisure trips. Nashville sure has changed from when I used to go as a kid, but it is a perfect travel destination for me still today. With all of the history of the city & its constant growth, I’m able to enjoy my old favorites & always find new gems. Read the rest of this entry »

Vacation News In Brief:

  • The Department of Transportation (DOT) has approved Continental Airlines‘ application to join the Star Alliance. It also granted antitrust immunity to Continental & United Airlines, the U.S. anchor of the Star Alliance. However, the DOT did insist on some “carve outs.” Continental & Star won’t be able to cooperate on routes to four European cities — Copenhagen, Geneva, Lisbon & Stockholm — & to Beijing. Certain transborder routes between the United States & Canada are also off the table. All that’s left now is the timing. Continental leaves the SkyTeam Alliance late in October & has said it wants to immediately (as in the next day) move into Star. Read the rest of this entry »

I love Washington, D.C. It’s one of the few major cities where you can live the high life for less, thanks to some affordably priced hotels, free Smithsonian museums & a plethora of civic sites. Here are my favorite ways to “do” Washington D.C. for free (or cheap!) if you are there on a vacation package.

I’m assuming you already know that most of the major museums (e.g. Natural History, Air & Space Museum, National Zoo) are free & open to the public. So let’s get beyond them to the lesser known spots. Read the rest of this entry »

It happens: Every so often, I’ll meet someone who tells me they “just don’t like Vegas.” Now, everyone’s entitled to their opinion, of course, but when I ask a few more questions, the issue usually involves an aversion to staying in the casino environment.

I could argue that every casino is a little different (some are so clean, quiet & elegant, you’d be shocked to learn there’s gambling going on!) but why bother? The fact is, if you’d like to experience all the amazing shows, restaurants, nightclubs, natural wonders & more that Vegas offers while keeping casino exposure to a minimum, there are plenty of great “non-gaming,” non-smoking Las Vegas hotels. I enjoyed stays at a few of them recently & came away impressed: Read the rest of this entry »

Free beer, beaches & baboons! What more could you ask for on a Florida vacation package? Here are my top picks for free (or almost free) things to do in Tampa.

ARTS & CULTURE

University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum (FREE) — Recently honored with a substantial Andy Warhol Foundation Gift of 150 photos produced by the artist, this museum curates exhibits more about stimulating dialog than having pretty pictures. Come to see cutting-edge exhibits from lesser known artists.

By E. C. Gladstone

Maybe it’s all an elaborate celebration for the Las Vegas Hilton’s 40th Anniversary, but suddenly the music of the 1960s is bursting out at all the Las Vegas hotels. The biggest entertainment buzz right now is for Human Nature (at Imperial Palace), the unlikely Australian boy band who has remade itself as a Motown tribute soulful enough to get Smokey Robinson himself to present them. With sharp suits, solid singing & more moves than U Haul, they dance in the aisles, they dance on the tables, they even get you to dance! Equally adept at covering the Temptations (“The Way You Do The Things You Do”), Supremes (“You Keep Me Hangin’ On”) & even Jackson 5 (“ABC”), the quartet is most showstopping when they sing a capella… Read the rest of this entry »

Family holidayFree Style Music Park

Free Style Music Park is Myrtle Beach’s newest family attraction.  Formerly the “Hard Rock Theme Park”, it has reopened this year to include a larger family section while keeping the rock ’n’ roll theme.  Other genres of music are also featured, & there are rides for all ages. As director of sales & marketing for Free Style Music Park, I wanted to offer my inside view of the park with answers to common questions from people thinking about a visit as part of a family vacation.
